Kitchen Design & Renovation Questions

What decisions do I need to make when designing my new kitchen?

Renovating a kitchen is a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle – there are lots of different pieces that fit together to make a kitchen. We make things easy for you, guiding you through the process of choosing: cabinets; door styles and colours; sinks; tap ware; handles; hinges; drawer runners; bench tops; electrical connections, lighting and power points; water piping (if you need connection to your fridge); adjustments for mobility or safety; cooking preferences; optimal storage; appliances; flooring; splashbacks; tiles and paint colours. We take care of all the tiny details, so you can relax and enjoy the process.

Can Gecko Kitchens remove walls to open up the space, add in sliding doors or a butler’s pantry or adjust window sizes?

Yes. We are licensed builders, which means we can easily undertake the full range of renovations that you need to achieve your dream kitchen.

I feel funny about telling you my budget – I am worried you are going to rip me off.

Every project has a budget. By knowing your approximate budget, we can help you choose the right finishes, appliances and fittings to stay within your budget and still achieve your goals. We believe in honesty and transparency and are happy for you to talk with our past clients so you can get peace of mind that you can trust us to deliver what we promise at a fair and reasonable price.

Do you also design for units, apartments or townhouses?

Yes – no problem at all! We are happy to design and install small kitchens or kitchenettes.

Why are custom designed cabinets important?

Custom designed means that you are not limited by fixed sizes available. This means every last inch of useable room can be squeezed into your kitchen. You are not stuck with dead space or strange cabinet layouts just to make things fit.

I want to keep my cupboards and only replace the doors and drawer fronts - can you do this?
Although this is possible, at Gecko Kitchens we prefer to give you a full kitchen replacement. This is because even though your cupboards (carcasses) may be in good condition now, eventually they will need replacing as well. This then means you run the risk of damaging your new doors and drawer fronts in the process. The carcasses are also usually the cheapest part of replacing a kitchen, therefore we perceive that it is not worth the risk to only save a small amount of money. We would advise that you seek the help of a cabinet maker/joiner, as they will do smaller jobs and shouldn't have a problem with completing the work you are after.

Kitchen Design Questions

How long does it take to remove and install my new kitchen?

Generally it takes 2 days in total. Out with the old one day, and in with the new the next.

Do I need to be on site while you are renovating my kitchen?

We understand that people have better things to do than hang around while we renovate. All our team are police checked and we can renovate your kitchen for you even if you are not home.

Do you empty all my kitchen cupboards for me?

Generally no – but if you need a hand, let us know and we can organise someone to come and do it for you.

Do I have to organise my own plumber, electrician, tiler, plasterer and/or painter if I hire you to design and install my kitchen?

We can manage the lot for you. We can call on our team of fully qualified tradesmen to make your renovation run smoothly, or we are happy to work with your own tradespeople if you prefer.

What if you find termite damage, wood rot, missing wall sheeting or find that some floorboards need replacing once you have removed my cabinets?

As registered builders we can quickly repair any damage for you. If we find a hidden problem, we will talk with you about the most cost-effective option to fix the issue. We will sort it for you quickly, easily and in a budget friendly way.

When should I polish the floorboards in my kitchen?

We recommend sanding back your floorboards prior to installing your new kitchen. However, the floor shouldn’t be fully finished until after installation as our tradies need to keep their boots on during installation (for safety reasons) and may scuff your floor.

Do I have to get rid of the old kitchen and rubbish?

No. We take care of that for you. We remove all renovation rubbish from your home and leave your kitchen sparkling clean and ready for you to enjoy.

Kitchen Appliance Questions

Do I need to source my own appliances?

Our motto is to make your renovation easy. We can find the best appliances to suit your needs and your budget (at generally better rates than you can source yourself), or we are happy for you to buy your appliances and have them delivered in time for installation.
